Detroit City

I picked the title of my blog, because it sounds bad-ass and it tells you a lot about me off the bat: I heart Detroit, comics and movies, and I will happily explain, in detail a theory that is both unprovable and possibly completely false.

First off, I’d like to highlight that I am aware of two things: 1. Gotham has been a nickname for New York for like over a hundred years.  2. Generally people agree that Batman’s Gotham is pretty much New York.

Now, I want you to set those two things aside and think about Gotham.  What images come to mind, when you think about Gotham.  What do you see?  Sweet architecture from the Art Nouveau and Art Deco era?  Why, that’s what Detroit looks like.   Do you imagine yourself in Times Square or in a dark, yet charming, alley?  Think of the most recent Batman films, that speak to “a dying city.”  Have you ever heard this phrase used to refer to an American city?  The point is, New York has crime and problems and stuff, but in my opinion, it doesn’t look like Gotham and it doesn’t feel like Gotham and it doesn’t need a super hero like my hometown.  My photos and posts about the city may lead you eventually to the same conclusion.  I’d like to close with a poem, by an excellent teacher from my alma mater (RC 4-evah):

“Homage to Frank O’Hara: Why I am not a New York School Poet”   by Ken Mikolowski
